Managing application access at Shanti Maargam: How an MDM solution enabled an NGO to provide digital educational services
Industry:Â Non-governmental organization
Location:Â Asia Pacific
Solution in Brief
Shanthi Maargam wanted to regulate application access for students on their Android devices while allowing essential educational applications. The NGO uses Entgra UEM to enforce app restrictions, centralize device management, and enable remote troubleshooting – all in a secure manner. Shanthi Maargam is now able to regulate access as intended, simplify daily tasks for device admins, and improve device maintenance.
About Shanthi Maargam
Shanthi Maargam is a Sri Lanka-based NGO that provides counseling support to vulnerable children and adolescents with the intention of reducing the impacts of violence in communities.
Mobile Device Management Goals
Shanthi Maargam has many Android devices in use. Students at the NGO use these devices for communication purposes, email correspondence, and to access the Google Play Store. The NGO’s key goal (and challenge) was to regulate access to applications on their devices to ensure students do not use or download any unspecified applications. Shanthi Maargam was specifically looking for a solution to block access to inappropriate applications while permitting use of specified educational applications that are essential for students’ learning.
Shanthi Maargam’s other goal was to facilitate students’ access to the Google Play Store on devices using their personal email accounts. This posed another challenge because, even though personal email accounts are in use, the devices must only contain the approved applications.
How Shanthi Maargam Uses MDM
Shanthi Maargam uses a range of capabilities from Entgra UEM to achieve their goals.
Centralize device and endpoint management
Shanthi Maargam manages all their devices from a centralized platform that eases the monitoring, tracking, and device updating processes.
Device and data security
Shanthi Maargam has access to security features such as remote device locking, device tracking and monitoring, data encryption, and secure browsing.
Remote support and troubleshooting
With remote troubleshooting, Shanthi Maargam device admins do not have to be physically present to diagnose any device malfunctions. They can troubleshoot issues, install updates, and address concerns without disrupting workflow.
Application and content management
The solution uses Entgra UEM’s forced uninstall feature enabling Shaanthi Maargam to install and uninstall applications, and add new releases remotely. Through the application restriction settings, the NGO can whitelist mobile applications for their devices. The enrollment application install policy ensures that enforced applications are installed during device enrollment.Â
Versatile device compatibility
Entgra UEM supports a wide number of device types and operational systems. Hence, the admins at Shanthi Maargam can manage applications and content across any device (not just Android) should they choose to, on any operational system to ensure compatibility throughout their device fleet.
